Zips Chocolate Swirl and Jessica Bailey
Jess and Swirl with trainer Gil Galyean
It was a huge thrill for seventeen-year-old, Jessica Bailey, and her family, when on August 8, 2003, she won the AQHYA World Championship on her beautiful mare by Zips Chocolate Chip, Zips Chocolate Swirl. Ironically, the Western Pleasure class was sponsored by Zips Chocolate Chip and the awards were presented by Joe and Suzy Jeane who raised and broke Swirl as a two year old.
This being Jess' first time to the Youth World Show, she was excited to just be at the show with the best of the best competing for the coveted award. In fact, all summer long and just 3 weeks earlier, Swirl was too sick to go to shows. She had battled an infection that settled in her neck and had the summer off to heal up, hoping that she would get well in time for the Youth World Show. She not only got well, she got rested and came back at the top of her game. When they made the top 20 finalists, Jess was very pleased and proud of Swirl. Little did they know that she had actually won that semi-finals class.
Jon Barry and
Swirl on the cover of the Journal       Zips Chocolate Swirl is a special horse, with as much try as any ten horses. She is one of those horses that people comment about having had the good fortune to know. Every trainer, rider, and caretaker has commented on her extreme good nature and sweet attitude. She was kind and willing enough to be trained by Jon Barry as a special mount for Dana Hunt Smith, paraplegic amateur rider. This great mind, combined with her exceptional western pleasure movement, allowed numerous wins prior to her World Championship: an Open and Amateur Superior in Western Pleasure, a top five at the Congress and a top ten at the World Show in the Senior Western Pleasure (with Gil Galyean aboard).
Jess and Swirl at Paws Up Ranch        When Jess and Swirl teamed up in 2002, under the guidance of Gil Galyean, they quickly became a team to beat. With very limited showing they became top competitors in the NSBA circuit, and in AQHA competition. Swirl, trained by Gil Galyean, is the kind of horse that is perfect for a skilled youth. Jess is able to take her home and maintain and show her for much of the year. The two show up at top shows across the country and are often the only youth competitors there without the assistance of a trainer. At the Florida Gulf and Gold Coast Circuit shows, Jess and Swirl were awarded 23.5 AQHA points in Western Pleasure. Although Gil could not attend the show, you can be sure that Jess was on the cell phone talking to him before and after each class. Both Jess and Swirl have learned alot under Gil's great program.
This year Swirl will also start her broodmare career. While she shows, she expecting a foal by embryo transfer to pass on her great strengths and those of her sire Zips Chocolate Chip. She was bred to One Hot Krymsun, two time World Champion and Congress Champion. Bailey Farm is very excited about this cross of beauty, grace, and goodmindness in both sire and dam. Jess will continue to show Swirl lightly this year and may also show one of her family's other horses.
